Trump cautions Taiwan on independence following Beijing meeting with Xi

Trump warned Taiwan against seeking formal independence after talks with Xi Jinping in Beijing.

US President Donald Trump on Friday warned self-ruled Taiwan against pursuing formal independence after holding talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

Speaking in an interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, Trump stressed the importance of maintaining stability across the Taiwan Strait amid growing tensions between Washington and Beijing.

“We’re not looking to have wars, and if you kept it the way it is, I think China’s going to be OK with that,” Trump said.

“But we’re not looking at somebody saying, ‘let’s go independent because the United States is backing us.’”

The remarks followed Trump’s summit with Xi, where the Taiwan issue featured prominently alongside discussions on trade, security cooperation and regional stability. China considers Taiwan part of its territory and opposes any formal declaration of independence.
