Trump’s ‘anti-weaponization’ fund dropped, Justice Department confirms

A controversial Trump-era initiative is heading for the scrap heap.

As USA Today reports, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche told lawmakers that the Trump administration will no longer move forward with a proposed $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund that had sparked fierce debate in Washington. The fund was originally designed to compensate people who claimed they were unfairly targeted by the federal government, but critics argued it lacked transparency and raised serious legal and ethical concerns.

The proposal quickly became a political headache. Republicans and Democrats alike questioned how the money would be distributed and who would qualify for payments. Some lawmakers were particularly concerned that individuals connected to the January 6 Capitol riot could potentially benefit from the fund. Those concerns helped fuel bipartisan opposition on Capitol Hill.

According to reports, the controversy threatened to complicate broader legislative priorities, including immigration and border-security funding that many Republicans were eager to advance. Faced with mounting pressure, the administration opted to pull the plug on the fund altogether.

While the compensation program is being abandoned, debate continues over related agreements tied to Trump’s legal disputes with the IRS. For now, however, one of the administration’s most controversial proposals appears to be officially off the table, bringing an end to a political storm that drew criticism from across the spectrum.
