FIFA backtracks on free World Cup tickets, asks fans to pay

FIFA has apologized after mistakenly issuing free World Cup tickets and is now asking affected fans to pay for them or lose their reservations.

As Sky News reports, FIFA has found itself in hot water after accidentally giving some fans complimentary tickets for the 2026 World Cup, only to later demand payment for those same seats. The governing body admitted the tickets were issued in error and contacted affected supporters with a correction.

According to reports, fans who received the unexpected free tickets were informed that they would need to pay the correct price to keep their reservations. FIFA reportedly expressed regret over the mistake, but the reversal has triggered frustration among supporters who believed they had legitimately secured a free entry to the tournament.

The incident adds to growing scrutiny over ticketing issues surrounding the expanded World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Ticket prices and FIFA’s sales policies have already sparked debate among fans, with some critics arguing that attending the tournament is becoming increasingly expensive.

For many supporters, the latest mix-up is an unwelcome distraction just days before kickoff. While FIFA has moved quickly to correct the error, the episode has left some fans questioning the organization’s handling of the ticketing process.
