164 killed, 900 injured in Venezuela earthquakes

Twin earthquakes have killed at least 164 people and injured 971 in Venezuela, with La Guaira state hit hardest as rescue teams race to find survivors.

Venezuela is digging through rubble after a brutal one-two punch from nature.

At least 164 people are dead and 971 injured after a 7.5-magnitude earthquake, quickly followed by a 7.2-magnitude tremor, struck Wednesday evening, Peoples Gazette reports.

La Guaira state — a vital port region — took the worst hit, with buildings collapsing across the area. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared it a disaster zone as rescue crews dig for survivors trapped beneath the wreckage.

The disaster has triggered a global response. President Trump called the quakes “massive in scale,” warning early reports looked grim, and said the US stands ready to help.

IOM chief Amy Pope said her agency is mobilising with partners to assess needs on the ground.

Search and rescue operations continue as Venezuela tallies the damage, Peoples Gazette reported.
