Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for stronger “strategic coordination and cooperation” with North Korea during a rare summit with leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang. According to CNN, Xi said both countries should deepen ties in trade, agriculture, technology, health and other key sectors as he began his first visit to North Korea in seven years.
The two-day trip, marked by military honours, cheering crowds and a 21-gun salute, comes as Beijing seeks to reaffirm its influence over its longtime ally amid North Korea’s growing ties with Russia.
Xi stressed that China’s commitment to its traditional friendship with Pyongyang would not change, while both leaders pledged to safeguard their security and development interests.
