The Dutch government is preparing a crackdown on “kidfluencers,” proposing a ban on children under 16 creating commercial content on social media platforms.
Officials argue that youngsters who earn money through sponsored posts, family vlogs, unboxing videos and other branded content are increasingly being treated as revenue generators rather than children.
Dutch Minister for Work and Participation Thierry Aartsen said minors face risks including loss of privacy, pressure from public exposure and potential harm to their self-image. The proposal would classify such activities as child labour, making commercial online content involving under-16s illegal.
According to The Telegraph, the move comes as European governments introduce tougher measures aimed at protecting children online. The Netherlands has already backed stricter guidance on young people’s social media use, citing growing concerns about mental health and digital safety.
