Johnson & Johnson wants to close the book on its talc troubles — for $5.5 billion. According to Peoples Gazette, the pharmaceutical giant announced Monday it has offered to settle roughly 76,000 lawsuits alleging its baby powder and other talc products caused ovarian cancer.
The deal still requires sign-off from legal firms representing at least 95 percent of claimants in state and federal courts. J&J said the settlement follows a favourable court ruling noting plaintiffs couldn’t prove specific causation.
The company maintains there’s no evidence linking talc to cancer, despite the WHO classifying it as “probably carcinogenic” in 2024. J&J stopped selling talc-based baby powder in the US in 2020 and globally by 2023.
