Italy’s foreign minister cancels US trip over Trump remarks

Italy’s foreign minister scrapped a planned US trip after Trump claimed PM Giorgia Meloni “begged” him for a G7 photo, deepening a rift between the two allies, according to CNN

Italy just pulled the plug on diplomacy. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani cancelled his trip to Washington, scheduled for June 21-22 , after Trump told Italian TV that Meloni had “begged” him for a photo at the G7 — and that he only agreed because he “felt sorry for her.”

Tajani called the comments “serious and offensive,” saying they “offend all of Italy.” Meloni herself fired back, insisting “neither I nor Italy ever beg.” The spat comes just days after signs of repair between the two leaders at the G7 summit in France — so much for that thaw.
