Keir Starmer announces resignation as UK prime minister and Labour leader

Sir Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as UK prime minister and Labour leader, triggering a leadership contest.

Sir Keir Starmer is stepping down as UK prime minister and Labour Party leader, opening the door to a contest that will decide Britain’s next leader.

Speaking from Downing Street, Starmer said he’d already informed King Charles and admitted he was no longer the right person to lead Labour into the next election. He’ll stay on as PM until a successor emerges.

Nominations open 9 July and close 16 July, before Parliament’s summer recess. If a contest is triggered, a new leader should be in place before September.

According to BBC News, an emotional Starmer thanked his family and promised full backing for whoever takes over next.
