Keir Starmer has resigned as Labour leader and PM, with Wes Streeting dropping out of the leadership race to back frontrunner Andy Burnham.
Keir Starmer’s done. Outside Downing Street Monday, he told the country he’d accepted his parliamentary party’s verdict and would step down “with good grace” — confirming he’d already informed King Charles.
He’ll stay on as caretaker PM until Labour sorts out a successor, with nominations opening July 9 and a new leader in place before Parliament’s back in September.
The real headline, though, came moments later. According to ABC News, Wes Streeting has dropped his own leadership bid entirely and thrown his support behind Andy Burnham — instantly making the Makerfield by-election winner the runaway favourite to become Britain’s next PM.
Months of grumbling over slow delivery and a brutal set of local election results finally caught up with Starmer.
