Trump says new Iran talks set for Monday after calling off strikes

President Trump says fresh US-Iran talks begin Monday after he cancelled planned strikes, but Tehran says no such negotiations are currently underway.

Trump, Iran To Resume Talks Monday As Strikes Called Off

The United States and Iran will hold new talks Monday afternoon, President Donald Trump said, after announcing he called off intense new strikes to allow for a deal on the Strait of Hormuz and Tehran’s nuclear program, NBC News reported.

Iran said Monday it was not currently holding talks with the US but was in discussions with Oman over a temporary safe route through the strait. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said an Oman deal alone would not reopen the strait while US “aggression” continues.

Speaking on Air Force One, Trump claimed the canceled strikes would have been “the biggest attack since World War II,” but said the option remains on the table “anytime we want.” He added Iran faces no deadline to reach an agreement.

The war has entered its sixth month, with new US casualties and rising energy prices adding domestic pressure. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke with Trump Saturday, urging de-escalation.
