The Supreme Court has ruled 6-3 that federal authorities can turn back asylum seekers at the US-Mexico border, effectively reviving the controversial “metering” policy.
The Supreme Court just handed Trump a big immigration win.
In a 6-3 ruling split along ideological lines, the court said federal law doesn’t require officials to process asylum claims from migrants who’ve reached a border crossing but haven’t actually stepped onto US soil, USA Today reports.
The decision effectively revives “metering” — the controversial policy capping how many asylum seekers get processed daily. It was used by both Democratic and Republican administrations before Biden scrapped it.
Immigrant rights groups slammed the ruling, warning it leaves vulnerable migrants stranded in dangerous conditions at the border while they wait for a shot at entry, USA Today reported.
