Supreme Court clears way for Trump to end Temporary Protected Status for over 356,000 Haitian and Syrian immigrants.
The US Supreme Court has handed President Donald Trump a major immigration victory, clearing the way for his administration to end Temporary Protected Status for more than 356,000 immigrants from Haiti and Syria.
The decision overturns lower court rulings that had blocked the termination of the programme, which lets eligible immigrants from crisis-hit countries live and work legally in the US. According to a report by CBS News, the court’s conservative majority ruled that federal law largely bars courts from reviewing such TPS decisions.
Justice Samuel Alito, writing for the court, said the TPS statute clearly blocks consideration of the respondents’ non-constitutional claims.
The ruling affects over 350,000 Haitians and about 6,000 Syrians, with possible broader implications for more than a million TPS beneficiaries.
The Trump administration argues the affected countries no longer meet the programme’s conditions, while immigrant advocates warn the move could expose thousands to deportation, job loss and family separation.
