U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has told Haitians on Temporary Protected Status to seek permanent residency or prepare to leave the U.S. following a Supreme Court ruling.
U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin is putting Haitian TPS holders on notice, get legal status or go home. Newsmax reports Mullin stressed that Temporary Protected Status was always a humanitarian stopgap, not a route to permanent residency.
He urged eligible migrants to pursue legal immigration channels and warned those who don’t qualify to begin making arrangements to return to Haiti. The government, he added, would offer logistical and financial support for voluntary departures.
The remarks follow a Supreme Court ruling allowing the Trump administration to terminate TPS protections for hundreds of thousands of Haitians and Syrians. The decision leaves many facing potential deportation as their legal cover under the programme falls away.
