Get permanent residence or leave, Homeland Security secretary tells migrants

US Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has told migrants on Temporary Protected Status to pursue permanent residency or return home, following a Supreme Court ruling allowing the protections to end.

The Trump administration is turning up the pressure on TPS holders. According to Peoples Gazette, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has told migrants living in the US under Temporary Protected Status to pursue permanent residency or return to their countries of origin, after the Supreme Court allowed the administration to end humanitarian protections for thousands of Haitian and Syrian migrants.

“Either try to fill out the paperwork and be here underneath a permanent status, or we’ll help you get back to your country,” Mullin said, adding that those who leave could get a plane ticket and financial assistance to resettle.

TPS lets people fleeing war, disasters and other crises live and work legally in the US. Peoples Gazette reported that some Republicans, including Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, oppose mass removals over economic and healthcare staffing concerns.
