WhatsApp will allow users to create unique usernames, eliminating the need to share phone numbers when connecting with others.
WhatsApp is getting a privacy upgrade. According to a report by Punch citing AFP, the Meta-owned platform is set to introduce usernames, allowing users to connect without revealing their phone numbers.
The feature lets users share a unique username instead of personal contact details, meaning phone numbers will no longer be automatically visible when joining large group chats or reaching out to people and businesses for the first time.
WhatsApp said there will be no public directory or username suggestions, so users must know an exact username before making contact. With more than three billion users globally, the company acknowledged some preferred usernames may already be taken.
Meta said username reservations will roll out gradually across countries over the coming months, with creators, small businesses and organisations able to reserve usernames already linked to their Facebook or Instagram accounts.
