SCOTUS Upholds Birthright Citizenship, Allows Trans Sports Bans
The Supreme Court dealt President Donald Trump a major defeat on Monday, upholding birthright citizenship and striking down his executive order against it, CNN reports. Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the court, said citizenship is “the right to have rights,” adding that the Fourteenth Amendment’s Framers extended that promise to “every free-born person in this land.”
The court also ruled states may bar transgender athletes from girls’ sports teams, and lifted a Watergate-era cap on coordinated spending between political parties and candidates.
Dissenting on the citizenship ruling, Justice Samuel Alito called it “one of the most important decisions in the history of the Court,” warning the majority “made a serious mistake” that would “seriously affect the country’s future.”
