SPAIN HEAT DEATHS
Spain has recorded more than 1,000 heat-related deaths in June as extreme temperatures swept across Europe, according to a report by Peoples Gazette.
The Carlos III Health Institute in Madrid said 1,028 people died from heat-related causes during the month, a sharp jump from the 407 deaths recorded in June 2025.
Spain’s State Meteorological Agency said June 2026 was the country’s second-warmest June on record, with average temperatures sitting 3.2 degrees Celsius above normal.
The agency also reported that the first half of 2026 was Spain’s hottest ever recorded, with temperatures averaging 1.6 degrees Celsius above normal. It added that the seven warmest first halves of the year since 1961 have all occurred within the last decade, while the 13 warmest Junes have come in the 21st century.
