The US Justice Department has ordered federal prosecutors to prioritise birth tourism investigations, hours after the Supreme Court upheld birthright citizenship.
DOJ Targets Birth Tourism After Supreme Court Birthright Ruling
The Trump administration isn’t backing down. Hours after the US Supreme Court struck down Trump’s executive order restricting birthright citizenship in a 6-3 ruling, the DOJ fired back with a sweeping directive, according to Reuters.
New assistant attorney general Colin McDonald issued a memo instructing federal prosecutors to pursue criminal charges — including visa fraud, money laundering, identity theft, and wire fraud — against foreign nationals who enter the US under false pretences to secure citizenship for their children. Prosecutors are directed to collaborate with DHS, which launched its own Birth Tourism Initiative in April.
