WHO Ends Hantavirus Outbreak

The World Health Organisation has officially declared the hantavirus outbreak linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship over, after the last identified contact completed quarantine and tested negative, according to Tribune Online.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the outbreak recorded 13 confirmed cases, including three deaths, with more than 650 contacts traced across 33 countries and territories. Research on hantavirus will continue through a multinational study spanning 21 countries aimed at improving diagnostics, treatments and vaccines.

WHO also raised alarm over the worsening Ebola outbreak in DR Congo, where nearly 40 new infections are recorded daily. The country has reported 1,406 confirmed cases and 438 deaths, with response efforts hampered by security challenges and attacks on treatment facilities.
