Mitch McConnell’s wife finally speaks on his health after weeks of silence

Former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao has broken her silence on husband Mitch McConnell’s hospitalisation, saying his condition did not require her to immediately cut short a planned visit to China.

“His Health Did Not Warrant an Immediate Return” — Chao Speaks Out On McConnell’s Health After Scrutiny Over China Visit

A spokesperson for Chao told The Daily Beast that she was overseas supporting her family’s philanthropic work when McConnell was admitted to hospital. “The Senator’s health did not warrant an immediate return to the U.S.,” the spokesperson said. Chao has since returned home, though her office did not specify when or provide fresh details on the senator’s condition.

The statement came amid growing scrutiny over Chao’s meetings with Chinese officials, including Vice President Han Zheng, while McConnell remained hospitalised. Emergency dispatch audio suggesting McConnell required CPR following a cardiac arrest has further fuelled public concern, though his office has not confirmed those details.

McConnell’s staff have continued to offer only limited updates, saying the Kentucky Republican is recovering and working with aides. He has been absent from Senate votes since his hospitalisation.
