Trump renews Greenland takeover push at NATO summit

President Donald Trump has renewed his push for US control of Greenland at the NATO summit in Turkey, drawing swift rebuttals from Denmark and Greenland.

“That Should Be Controlled by the United States not Denmark”, Trump said

Trump raised the Greenland issue during a bilateral meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan shortly after arriving in Ankara, The Hill reports.

“Greenland doesn’t help Denmark, Denmark doesn’t spend money to really help Greenland, but it’s an important part for the United States,” Trump said, adding, “That should be controlled by the United States, not by Denmark.”

Trump also warned European allies: “They better be careful. With immigration and energy, if they’re not careful with those two things, you’re not going to have a Europe anymore.” He acknowledged the Greenland push “hurt my relationship with NATO.”

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded firmly in Turkey, saying discussions on Greenland were not on the agenda. “I hope that it is equally well known everywhere that this is not going to happen,” she said. Greenlandic Foreign Minister Múte Egede added that Greenland’s future belonged to its own people. “That’s how it has always been. And that’s how it always will be,” he wrote on Facebook.
