An estimated 2,700 people may have died in England and Wales from May and June’s heatwaves, according to a study released Monday by researchers at Imperial College London, the Met Office, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

The study found 42% of those deaths were linked to human-caused warming. May’s national heat record hit 35.1°C in West London, while June saw temperatures exceed 37°C in East Anglia, Peoples Gazette reports.

Officials noted both heatwaves broke records dating back to 1944 and 1976, respectively.
