CANADIAN COUPLE SUES SURROGATE OVER REFUSAL TO ABORT BABY
A Canadian couple has sued the surrogate mother who carried their now two-year-old son, alleging she refused to terminate the pregnancy after prenatal tests detected a cleft lip and possible genetic abnormalities.
According to the Daily Caller, citing court documents obtained by the National Post, the couple claims the surrogate failed to keep them informed about the baby’s health, breached confidentiality, put the child at risk and caused emotional distress.
The surrogate has denied the allegations, saying specialists later found the baby was otherwise healthy and that she declined the abortion because the condition was not life-threatening. The lawsuit does not specify damages, though the surrogate claimed the couple sought about $600,000. The case is before the Ontario Superior Court.
