The U.S. military launched fresh airstrikes on Iran on Sunday after a base attack in Jordan killed two American troops, further escalating the war over control of the Strait of Hormuz.
US Hits Iran to “Swiftly Punish” Deadly Base Attack
The U.S. military said it struck Iran on Sunday to “swiftly punish” the Revolutionary Guard, after an attack on a Jordan base killed two U.S. service members, left one missing, and hospitalized four others, AP News reports.
U.S. Central Command said the strikes aimed to further weaken Iran’s grip on the Strait of Hormuz, a corridor once carrying 20% of global oil supplies before Tehran shut it to traffic.
Iran’s state media reported strikes near Sirik, Hajiabad, Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island in Hormozgan province, and near Shadegan in Khuzestan.
Iranian authorities said at least 50 people have died and over 500 been wounded from U.S. strikes in three weeks.
In Iraq’s Kurdish region, a drone hit a dissident base near Irbil, wounding eight.
Iran’s supreme leader, through son Mojtaba Khamenei, warned of “unforgettable lessons,” calling Trump’s signature “worthless and invalid,” while Tehran said it was suspending commitments under last month’s interim deal.
