The European Union has fined Google $1 billion for breaching the Digital Markets Act by favouring its own services on Search and restricting app developers on Google Play.

Google has been handed its first fine under the EU’s Digital Markets Act — and it’s a big one. The European Commission slapped the tech giant with €890 million ($1 billion) on Thursday for two separate violations, according to CNN.
Brussels said Google promoted its own shopping and transport services on Search over rivals, and restricted app developers from offering customers cheaper deals outside Google Play. The fines: €460 million for the search bias, €430 million for the app store restrictions.
EU tech sovereignty commissioner Henna Virkkunen said the penalties reflect “the gravity and duration” of Google’s non-compliance. This is a developing story.
