France has become the first European country to ban under-15 children from social media, with the law taking full effect in January 2027.

France has made history — becoming the first European country to lock under-15s out of social media. Parliament passed the law Tuesday, and President Emmanuel Macron has pledged to sign it, according to Tribune Online.
Age verification kicks in from September, when under-15s won’t be able to open new accounts. By January 2027, everyone in France will need to prove they’re over 15 to stay on social media.
France follows Australia, the first country to introduce such a ban. But experts cite mixed results there, with Curtin University’s Tama Leaver telling the BBC many Australian teens still find workarounds despite the restrictions.
