US Says It Will Use Frozen Iranian Assets To Fund Ship Damage As Strikes Continue
The US military has launched strikes on Iran for the 13th consecutive night, with Iranian state media reporting four killed and five injured, according to a report by the BBC.
President Donald Trump said he would use Iranian assets held by the US to pay for “any damages to Ships, Cargo, or anything related thereto.” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi hit back, calling the move an “incendiary precedent” and warning “ensuing chaos will not be pretty or peaceful.”
The strikes follow Yemen’s Houthis claiming attacks on two Saudi tankers in the Red Sea, pushing oil prices past $100 a barrel, the highest since May. US Central Command said it targeted Iranian command centers, drone facilities and coastal surveillance sites.
Reuters reported only one tanker transited the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, the lowest since May 7. Bahrain and Jordan both sounded air sirens as tensions escalated.
The strikes come three weeks after Trump declared a June ceasefire “over” following Iranian attacks on ships in Hormuz.
