Maine Democrats have chosen former state Senate President Troy Jackson as their new US Senate nominee, replacing Graham Platner ahead of November’s election.
MAINE DEMOCRATS PICK TROY JACKSON FOR SENATE
Jackson secured overwhelming support from party delegates at a special convention in Bangor after Platner withdrew from the race following sexual assault allegations, which he has denied, according to the New York Post.
Jackson, a fifth-generation logger and former Maine Senate president, will now challenge incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins in a contest expected to play a key role in determining control of the US Senate. Party leaders rallied behind Jackson after other potential contenders stepped aside to back his candidacy.
Republicans have already begun attacking Jackson over his political record and past controversies, setting the stage for one of the country’s most closely watched Senate races.
