“The lack of communication between us was the biggest problem,” Colombian president Gustavo Petro told CBS News’
@lilialuciano, saying intentional miscommunication fueled months of tensions before his first ever call with President Trump on Wednesday.
Petro described his first ever conversation with Trump as historic and said the absence of direct dialogue had been one of the most serious issues, adding that renewed communication could help “stop a world war.” Trump called the telephone conversation a “Great Honor,” adding that the two leaders are planning to meet at the White House at some point. Trump said Petro called “to explain the situation of drugs and other disagreements that we have had.”
In the wake of the U.S. attack on Venezuela and capture of the country’s former president, Petro said any attack on his country by the U.S. would start a civil war in Colombia, and “would be dumb policy.”
