The Trump administration has ended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalia, requiring several thousand Somali nationals currently living in the United States, including hundreds in Minnesota, to leave the country by March 17, according to a report from Fox News.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said the decision was based on improved conditions in Somalia, stating, “Temporary means temporary,” and adding that the country “no longer meets the law’s requirement for Temporary Protected Status,” while noting that continued protection is “contrary to our national interests” as the administration seeks to put Americans first. Sources at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said 2,471 Somali nationals are currently under TPS, with 1,383 additional applications pending, as the move coincides with ongoing ICE operations in Minnesota and mounting legal and political pushback from state and city officials.
