U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that the 2026 midterm elections may be unnecessary, citing what he described as sweeping second-term achievements, while dismissing criticism from within his party, economic concerns and unfavorable polling.
In an interview with Reuters, Trump expressed frustration that Republicans could lose control of the House of Representatives and possibly the Senate, saying it was “some deep psychological thing” that “when you win the presidency, you don’t win the midterms,” before adding, “when you think of it, we shouldn’t even have an election.”
Reuters reported that Trump repeatedly brushed aside concerns from the public, business leaders and fellow Republicans on issues including Greenland, the economy and a Justice Department investigation involving Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, declaring “fake” a Reuters/Ipsos poll showing just 17 percent support for seizing control of Greenland and repeatedly saying, “I don’t care,” when told of opposition from Senate Republicans and warnings from JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon about interference in the Fed.
Trump also dismissed public worries over high prices, incorrectly describing the economy as the strongest “in history,” and said he simply needed to better promote his record, adding, “A lot of times, you can’t convince a voter… You have to just do what’s right.”
On immigration enforcement, Reuters reported that Trump said he would continue sending armed ICE agents into cities, claiming his actions had taken “thousands of murderers out of our country,” an assertion the news agency noted there is “no evidence to support.”
