Large-scale protests erupted on Saturday across Denmark and Greenland after President Donald Trump reportedly suggested the United States should take control of Greenland, with demonstrators gathering in Copenhagen, Nuuk and other cities to defend the island’s democracy and self-rule, chanting slogans such as “Greenland is not for sale” and “Hands off Greenland,” as Uagut chair Julie Rademacher told crowds that Greenlanders had “unwillingly become a focal point in a broader struggle over democracy and rights,” while Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen joined rallies in Nuuk, tensions rose further after Trump warned of possible tariffs against opponents of his plans and linked Greenland to the proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense system, even as experts questioned the necessity of ownership given existing U.S. military access under long-standing agreements with Denmark.
