At least 39 people were killed and 122 injured after a high-speed train derailed and collided with an oncoming train near Adamuz in Spain’s southern Cordoba province late Sunday, in the country’s deadliest rail disaster since 2013, according to emergency services and officials, with investigators examining a faulty rail joint as a possible cause while rescue efforts were hampered by the area’s remote terrain.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez cancelled a trip to Davos as Transport Minister Oscar Puente visited the site, and survivors described scenes of panic and devastation, with one passenger saying, “The train tipped to one side… then everything went dark, and all I heard was screams,” as authorities said human error was virtually ruled out and an official investigation was underway.
