President Donald Trump launched a late-night burst of social media activity on Tuesday, compressing a week’s worth of diplomatic pressure into hours by announcing talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, unveiling plans for a Greenland summit, leaking what appeared to be private messages from French President Emmanuel Macron, sharing AI-generated images depicting Greenland under U.S. control, mocking Canada’s sovereignty, and attacking the United Kingdom over its plan to cede the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, according to a report from Mediaite.
Trump said he had “a very very good telephone call” with Rutte and agreed to discuss Greenland at the World Economic Forum in Davos, reiterating that the island “is imperative for National and World Security,” as his administration announced 10% tariffs on eight European countries, triggering urgent discussions among European leaders.

He later posted images showing a doctored map of the Western Hemisphere under a U.S. flag and another reading “Greenland — U.S. Territory Est. 2026,” before accusing Britain of “GREAT STUPIDITY” for “planning to give away the Island of Diego Garcia, the site of a vital U.S. Military Base, to Mauritius, and to do so FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER,” a move that reportedly blindsided London, especially after Secretary of State Marco Rubio had previously praised the Chagos deal as “a critical asset for regional and global security.”
