Federal immigration agents shot and killed 37-year-old Alex Pretti during an immigration operation in Minneapolis on Friday, according to hospital records and family members who identified him as an intensive care unit nurse. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara stated the victim had no criminal history beyond traffic tickets and “is a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry.” The shooting occurred amid the Trump administration’s intensified immigration crackdown and follows the January 7 fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Good by federal agents in the same city.
Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said officers fired “defensive shots” after Pretti approached them with a handgun and “violently resisted” when officers attempted to disarm him. McLaughlin stated the victim possessed “a firearm with two magazines.” However, the circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain unclear, and the incident has triggered immediate calls for investigation and accountability from Democratic lawmakers and Minnesota officials.
Congressional Democrats responded with sharp criticism, with Representative Robert Garcia calling for ICE to be “abolished” and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to be impeached. Representative Brad Schneider demanded that “every agent involved in this shooting must be suspended pending a full and independent investigation.” Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar posted on social media: “Donald Trump and all your lieutenants who ordered this ICE surge: watch the horrific video of the killing today. The world is watching.”
The shooting sparked immediate protests in freezing temperatures, with an angry crowd gathering at the scene. Chief O’Hara appealed for calm, stating: “Our demand today is for those federal agencies that are operating in our city to do so with the same discipline, humanity and integrity that effective law enforcement in this country demands.” Governor Tim Walz contacted the White House and called on President Trump to end the immigration crackdown in Minnesota.
