Millions of Mac users must upgrade or stop using Chrome

Google will stop supporting Chrome on macOS Monterey after July 2026, forcing millions of Mac users to upgrade their operating system or switch browsers to maintain security updates.

Google has announced that Chrome 150 will be the final version supporting macOS 12 Monterey, with Chrome 151 scheduled for July 28, 2026, requiring macOS 13 Ventura or later. “Chrome 151 (tentatively scheduled for release on July 28, 2026) is the first version of Chrome that requires macOS 13 Ventura or later,” Google stated, adding that users must upgrade to “continue receiving the latest security updates and Chrome features.” The decision affects users with older Macs incompatible with newer operating systems.

Security experts warn users must not run Chrome without updates. “Older versions of Chrome will continue to work,” Google says, “but there will be no further updates released for users on this operating system.” Apple stopped supporting Monterey in mid-2024, making Google’s withdrawal inevitable. For users unable to upgrade, experts recommend switching to Safari, though a small percentage of Mac users still run the older OS and must take action before the July cutoff.
