Fifa president Gianni Infantino has apologised for remarks about British football fans that drew criticism from supporter groups. Speaking to Sky News, he said the comments were “meant to be more of a light-hearted remark” and insisted it was “not my intention” to offend supporters from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Infantino also defended awarding US President Donald Trump the inaugural Fifa Peace Prize and said Fifa would “definitely” consider lifting Russia’s ban. “We should actually never ban any country from playing football because of the acts of their political leaders,” he said, adding, “Somebody needs to keep the ties open.”
