GOP Senators fear Trump backlash could threaten Senate majority

Senate Republicans fear that Trump’s low approval and economic concerns could spark a Democratic surge in the midterms, threatening their Senate majority.

Senate Republicans are growing increasingly concerned that President Trump’s handling of the economy and aggressive deportation policies could fuel a Democratic wave, threatening their three-seat majority. The alarm intensified after Democrat Taylor Rehmet won a North Texas state Senate seat that Trump carried by 17 points in 2024. One GOP senator described the result as “a wake-up call,” warning that battleground senators face a “deteriorating” political environment ahead of November.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune urged Republicans to communicate their economic record, stating, “We need to up our game and do a better job of… delivering that message.” While GOP leaders remain confident about retaining control, they acknowledge rising voter dissatisfaction and note that Trump’s approval rating sits at 42.2 percent, with many independents expressing unease over economic conditions and deportation policies.
