A suicide bombing at a Shiite mosque in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, killed at least 31 people and wounded more than 130 on Friday, local authorities said. City officials confirmed the toll at the Imam Bargah Qasr-e-Khadijatul Kubra mosque in the Tarlai area. Police said the blast occurred after Friday prayers and warned the casualty figure could rise.
A security source said, “The attacker was stopped at the gate and detonated himself.” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack, vowing those responsible would be brought to justice, while Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar called it “a heinous crime against humanity.” No group immediately claimed responsibility amid rising militant violence in the country.
