A US submarine strike on an Iranian warship off Sri Lanka left at least 101 missing, as Sri Lankan forces rescued 32 survivors and launched emergency response efforts.
The United States carried out a strike on an Iranian warship off the coast of Sri Lanka, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed Wednesday, after three US officials told Reuters the attack was launched by a US submarine. At least 101 people are missing following the strike on the vessel identified as the Iris Dena, officials said.
Sri Lanka’s military rescued at least 32 people from the sinking ship near Galle, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath told parliament. The Sri Lankan navy dispatched a rescue mission after receiving a distress call, a defense ministry spokesperson said. Injured survivors were taken to a hospital in Galle for treatment, according to local media.
