A deadly series of tornadoes across Michigan and Oklahoma has claimed at least eight lives and left a trail of destruction, prompting state emergencies as search and recovery efforts continue.
At least eight people have been confirmed dead after a violent two-day outbreak of tornadoes and severe storms devastated communities across Michigan and Oklahoma. In southern Michigan, four fatalities were reported on Friday—including three victims in the Union Lake area and a 12-year-old boy in Cass County as massive whirlwinds reduced homes to rubble and prompted Governor Gretchen Whitmer to activate the State Emergency Operations Center to coordinate an “all-hands-on-deck response.”
Oklahoma officials confirmed four additional deaths, including a mother and daughter killed when their vehicle was struck near Fairview on Thursday and two individuals killed when a tornado hit a home near Beggs on Friday evening. While rescue teams continue to clear roads and search debris, the National Weather Service warned that the severe weather threat remains widespread, and local responders like Okmulgee County emergency manager Jeff Moore noted, “We’re just getting everywhere as fast as we can, clearing roads as fast as we can,” to restore safety to the storm-ravaged regions.
