Kansas City International Airport evacuated over bomb threat, later reopens

Kansas City International Airport resumed normal operations Sunday afternoon after a terminal evacuation and flight ground stop triggered by a non-credible security threat.

Authorities at Kansas City International Airport (MCI) evacuated portions of the terminal and grounded all flights on Sunday, March 8, 2026, following a security threat that was later determined to be a hoax. The Kansas City Aviation Department, working alongside the FBI, moved approximately 2,000 travelers onto the tarmac and diverted several inbound Southwest Airlines flights as law enforcement and K9 units conducted a sweep of the facility.

While the department initially stated that “as a precaution, the department has evacuated sections of the Airport Terminal” to allow police and federal agents to “substantiate any potential threat,” the airport was declared safe and reopened by mid-afternoon. An FBI spokesperson confirmed that the bureau was “working with airport and law enforcement officials to determine the credibility of the threat,” which follows a period of heightened vigilance across U.S. transportation hubs due to the ongoing conflict with Iran that began in late February.
