Israeli officials say chances of U.S.–Iran deal ‘very small’

Israeli officials say prospects for a U.S.–Iran agreement remain slim as major disagreements persist and the United States continues military deployments in the Middle East.

Officials in Israel have said the chances of a diplomatic agreement between the United States and Iran remain “very small,” citing major differences in demands from both sides. The remarks come despite claims of progress by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding ongoing contacts aimed at de-escalating tensions.

According to sources involved in mediation efforts, Washington is seeking restrictions on Iran’s nuclear programme, ballistic missiles and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, while Tehran is demanding compensation and guarantees against future attacks. “At the moment, the Iranians are insisting on American compensation, as well as guarantees from the administration that there will be no further action against Iran as part of any agreement,” the sources said.

Meanwhile, U.S. military deployments in the Middle East are continuing, including the movement of Marines capable of supporting a potential operation to seize Kharg Island. Israeli officials said there has been no change in coordination with the U.S. military, noting, “Everything is continuing as usual. There is no change in the American war plans – and we do not see any such change.”
