83-year-old US veteran dies from injuries sustained from random NYC subway attack; suspect charged with murder

A four-time deported migrant is facing murder charges after 83-year-old Air Force veteran Richard Williams died from injuries sustained in a random, unprovoked subway shoving attack in Manhattan

Richard Williams, an 83-year-old U.S. Air Force veteran and cancer survivor, died on March 17 from injuries sustained after being randomly shoved onto the subway tracks at the Lexington Avenue-63rd Street station. His alleged attacker, Bairon Hernandez, a 34-year-old Honduran national with a history of four prior deportations and 15 previous criminal charges, was arrested at a homeless shelter and now faces upgraded charges of second-degree murder.

The unprovoked March 8 attack, which also targeted 30-year-old John Pena, left Williams brain-dead and prompted his daughter, Debbie Williams, to call for severe retribution, stating, “I want him to suffer for the rest of his life. Prison justice would be appropriate.” While Hernandez’s defense team maintains they have “yet to see the indictment,” federal authorities have condemned the incident, noting the suspect “should never have been able to walk our streets and harm innocent Americans.”
