Protests against Nepal’s social-media ban grow more violent as demonstrators set buildings on fire

Violent protests in Nepal over a social media ban and governance issues have left at least 19 dead, forced the prime minister’s resignation, and triggered nationwide unrest.

Protests in Nepal have escalated into widespread violence following a government ban on social media, with demonstrators setting government buildings and politicians’ homes ablaze in the capital, Kathmandu. The unrest intensified despite the government lifting the ban, as anger grew over alleged corruption and police actions. Security forces had earlier opened fire on protesters, leaving at least 19 people dead.

Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli resigned amid mounting pressure, though protests continued with tens of thousands remaining on the streets. Government facilities were attacked, roads blocked, and top officials evacuated to safety as the situation deteriorated. Authorities warned of further action to restore order, while calls for dialogue increased.

The demonstrations, largely driven by young people, reflect deeper frustrations over unemployment, inequality, and political privilege. International figures, including António Guterres, urged restraint and peaceful resolution, while rights groups criticised the proposed social media regulations as attempts to suppress freedom of expression.
