Air defenses successfully intercepted kamikaze drones targeting the U.S. Consulate and a nearby military base in Erbil on Saturday amid a broader regional escalation following the recent U.S.-Israeli offensive against Iran.
Air defense systems were activated in Iraq’s northern Erbil governorate Saturday to intercept a series of kamikaze drone strikes targeting the U.S. Consulate and a U.S. military base near Erbil Airport, according to local sources and social media footage showing the projectiles being destroyed mid-air. The strikes, which also targeted the Duhok residence of Kurdish Regional Government head Nechirvan Barzani earlier in the day, mark a continued escalation of regional hostilities following a joint U.S.-Israeli offensive on Iran that began on February 28.
U.S. officials and regional analysts link the surge in violence to Tehran’s vowed retaliation for the deaths of over 1,340 people, including former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, as Iran continues to launch “waves of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets.” While the drones in Erbil were reportedly neutralized, the ongoing conflict continues to inflict “casualties and infrastructure damage while disrupting global markets and aviation.”
