Quantum physics technique can verify someone’s location, scientists say

Scientists have demonstrated a quantum technique that could verify a person’s location using entangled particles, potentially improving future cybersecurity systems.

Scientists say a quantum physics method could confirm a person’s physical location using the phenomenon of entanglement. The technique, known as quantum position verification, was presented at the American Physical Society Global Physics Summit by physicist Abigail Gookin. It relies on Quantum Entanglement, a process where two particles remain linked even when separated by large distances.

Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) tested the system using verifier stations connected by optical fibers to a central participant. The experiment successfully confirmed the participant’s location, suggesting future applications in cybersecurity and communication networks. Gookin said, “This is the first time we can concretely tie someone’s location to their information.”
