“Because I am not black”: Musk blasts South Africa over Starlink licence dispute

Elon Musk’s criticism of South Africa’s ownership laws over Starlink licensing has ignited a global debate on race-based policies and business regulation.

A dispute has erupted between Elon Musk and South Africa over regulatory barriers preventing Starlink from operating in the country. Musk criticised local ownership rules as “openly racist,” while authorities insist companies must comply with post-apartheid empowerment policies before obtaining licences.

Musk alleged that Starlink was blocked because of race, stating, “South Africa won’t allow Starlink to be licenced, even though I was BORN THERE, simply because I am not Black!” He also claimed officials suggested improper workarounds, adding he refused such options “on principle.”

The row centres on Black economic empowerment laws requiring ownership inclusion for historically disadvantaged groups. South African authorities maintain the policy addresses inequality and applies to all firms. The standoff has triggered wider debate on balancing economic redress with foreign investment and global tech expansion.
