The DOJ has indicted the SPLC for allegedly funding extremist figures through a covert informant scheme, while major donors remain silent.
Federal prosecutors have charged the Southern Poverty Law Center with wire fraud, bank fraud and money laundering, alleging it funneled over $3 million to extremist figures. The U.S. Department of Justice claims the payments were made under the guise of informant operations without donors’ knowledge.
High-profile donors, including George Clooney and George Soros, have not publicly responded. Other backers such as Tim Cook and corporate entities were also named, with some distancing themselves from the organization following the indictment.
Critics have condemned the alleged actions, with Curtis T. Hill Jr. stating the group should “be taken down brick by brick” if proven true. Prosecutors say funds reached individuals linked to the Unite the Right rally, raising concerns about oversight and donor transparency.
